Peace lily maintenance: watering, light and everyday care
Good peace lily maintenance starts with bright, indirect light, a pot that drains and a check of the soil before watering. Keep the mix lightly moist rather than constantly saturated, and empty water left in the outer pot. A weekly reminder can prompt an inspection; it should not automatically trigger another drink.
Choose a position you can maintain
A peace lily is useful where you want broad, upright foliage, but leave enough room to lift the pot out for watering. A decorative container that hides standing water makes the routine harder to manage. Keep the plant away from direct afternoon sun and from heating or air-conditioning vents.
Clemson Extension recommends warm indoor conditions, with daytime temperatures around 68–85 °F. Avoid a cold window ledge where leaves press against the glass. Low-light tolerance does not mean a windowless room provides enough light for steady growth or flowers.
Water after checking the root zone
Touch the upper potting mix and lift the pot to learn how its weight changes as it dries.
When watering is needed, wet the mix evenly and let excess water drain completely.
Return the pot to its cover only after draining; check that no water has pooled beneath it.
Inspect more often during active growth and warm weather, but expect slower drying in a cool, dim room.
Drooping is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis by itself. A dry, light pot and a wet, heavy pot call for different responses. If the mix is already wet, repeatedly adding water can make root problems worse. Record the last watering and inspect drainage before changing the routine.
Feed lightly and repot for roots
Use a modest fertilizer routine while the plant is growing. NC State cautions that excess fertilizer and accumulated salts can damage roots and leaf tips. Follow the chosen product’s instructions conservatively rather than feeding each time a leaf looks tired.
Repot when roots become crowded or emerge through drainage holes. Move to a pot only a little wider, with fresh, freely draining indoor potting mix. A much larger container can stay wet longer. Keep the crown at a similar level and avoid burying leaf bases.
Troubleshoot one change at a time
What you notice | What to check first |
|---|---|
Drooping leaves | Moisture in the pot, drainage and recent heat exposure |
Brown tips | Dry spells, fertilizer use and the plant’s position |
Yellowing with wet mix | Water retained in the outer pot and root condition |
Few flowers | Available light, plant maturity and general growth |
These observations narrow the problem; they do not prove one cause. Take a dated photo for your own comparison, change one likely factor and watch new growth. Existing brown tissue will not turn green again. Remove fully spent flowers or damaged leaves with clean tools and wipe dusty leaves with a damp cloth.
Place it with children and pets in mind
Peace lilies contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and should not be chewed. Put the plant where children and pets cannot reach it, including any fallen leaves. For a suspected exposure, use appropriate poison-control or veterinary guidance rather than a home remedy.
