McAfee Knob: plan the hike, parking and return before you go
McAfee Knob is a day hike on the Appalachian Trail near Roanoke, Virginia, with a broad rock viewpoint over the surrounding valleys. Treat it as a substantial walk rather than a quick stop for a photograph. The route, parking choice and return time should be settled before you reach the trailhead.
Allow time for the complete walk
The Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club describes the hike from the VA 311 parking area as just under 8 miles round trip, with about 1,400 feet of climbing. It gives a typical completion range of four to six hours. Roanoke County describes the distance as approximately 7.5 miles; both accounts point to a full outing, not a short viewpoint stroll.
Use the published range to start your plan, then add margin for your group, breaks and weather. Do not schedule arrival at the rock as the end of the outing: the walk back still needs daylight, energy and transport. Set a turnaround time before starting and keep it even if the viewpoint is close.
Use the right starting point
The trail club identifies the VA 311 parking area at 4440 Catawba Valley Road and reports that the redesigned lot and pedestrian bridge are open. Follow current on-site signs and the designated bridge approach. Some older route descriptions still mention crossing the road directly; do not use an old sentence instead of the current pedestrian arrangement.
Parking is limited. Both local sources warn against parking along VA 311, where vehicles may be ticketed and towed. A full lot is a reason to use a permitted alternative or change plans, not to leave a vehicle in a traffic or emergency-access space.

Compare alternatives before changing the route
Roanoke County links a bookable trailhead shuttle and alternative parking information. Check its operating dates, reservations and return arrangements directly before relying on it. A seasonal service is not a guarantee of a ride on any chosen day.
The trail club also describes access from the Catawba Sustainability Center and Catawba Community Center. These alternatives make the outing roughly ten miles or more round trip. They are different route plans, not overflow spaces with the same walking distance. Confirm permitted parking hours and use the matching map.
Prepare for the walk and the viewpoint
The local guidance calls for proper walking footwear, water, food, extra clothing, navigation and an independent flashlight. Check the forecast and trail information shortly before leaving. Keep the map available without relying on continuous mobile reception, and tell someone the route and expected return.
On the trail, follow the marked route and preserve energy for the descent. At the viewpoint, leave room for other walkers and keep a comfortable distance from the edge. A photograph does not require sitting or standing in an exposed position. Wet or icy rock is a reason to be more conservative about where you stop.
Roanoke County: hike overview, parking restrictions and shuttle links
For a first visit, choose the simplest permitted access, leave a generous return margin and keep a backup activity if parking or conditions do not cooperate. This is general trip planning, not an assessment of a particular person’s fitness or the trail’s condition on the day.
