Free Live Chat for Websites: Limits to Check Before You Start
Free live chat is real: several vendors let you put a working chat widget on your website and answer visitors at no cost. The catch is in the limits. Free plans usually cap the number of agents or monthly conversations, shorten or hide conversation history, keep the vendor's branding in the widget, and include little or no AI. Check those five limits against your expected volume before you install, and know which paid step you'll need when you outgrow them.
This guide explains each limit, shows what several well-known free plans included in October 2026, and ends with a list of questions to answer before you connect any free chat to your site.

Why free live chat exists — and how vendors make money from it
Vendors give chat away for three reasons: to get you into their ecosystem (a CRM, a marketing suite, an e-commerce platform), to sell upgrades once your volume grows, or to sell add-ons such as AI, branding removal or extra channels. None of these is a problem in itself. A free plan is a fine way to learn whether your visitors want to chat at all.
The problem is surprise. A plan that works for 30 conversations a month may stop working at 300, and the moment you notice is often the busiest week of your year. Knowing the limits upfront lets you plan the switch, or choose a tool whose first paid step you can live with.
The five limits that matter
1. Agents (seats)
Free plans often allow one to three people to answer. That sounds like enough for a small business until you count the owner, the person covering weekends and the seasonal helper.
Questions to ask:
How many people can answer on the free plan?
Does a manager who only reads conversations count as a seat?
What does the next seat cost, and is it sold one by one or only in bundles?
2. Conversations and visitors
Some free plans cap conversations instead of agents. Watch the definition: a "billable conversation" may count every chat a visitor starts, including spam and "hi" messages nobody follows up. Visitor tracking can have its own monthly cap.
Questions to ask:
Is there a monthly limit on conversations, chats or tracked visitors?
What happens at the limit — does the widget disappear, stop accepting messages or keep working with a warning?
Do bot-only or spam conversations count?
3. History and data retention
This is the limit people discover last. Some plans keep only recent conversations or hide older ones until you upgrade. If a customer comes back after three months about a warranty claim, you want that first conversation.
Questions to ask:
How long are conversations kept on the free plan, and can I see all of them?
Can I export conversations, including attachments?
If I downgrade or stop paying later, what happens to history?
4. Files and storage
Customers send photos of damaged parcels, screenshots of errors and PDFs of invoices. Free plans may cap file size, total storage or both, and some delete attachments after a period.
Questions to ask:
Can visitors send files and images on the free plan?
What is the storage limit, and what does extra storage cost?
Are attachments kept as long as the conversation text?
5. Branding
Almost every free widget shows "Powered by" or "We run on" with the vendor's name. For many sites that's fine. For agencies building client sites or brands with strict design rules, it may not be. Removing it is usually a paid upgrade — sometimes a cheap add-on, sometimes only on a higher plan.
And a sixth one: AI
AI assistants are the most common upsell in 2026. Free plans typically include none, a small trial allowance, or a basic rule-based bot builder. AI pricing then follows a separate meter: per resolution, per conversation or per token. A free chat with a paid AI add-on can cost more than a cheap paid chat with AI included, so price the whole thing.

What free plans included in October 2026
The table below summarizes free plans from the vendors' own pricing pages as we read them in October 2026. Plans change often; recheck before you decide.
Vendor | Free plan in short | Key limits and paid steps |
|---|---|---|
Free live chat, ticketing and knowledge base | "Powered by tawk.to" branding stays unless you pay $29/month to remove it; AI Assist from $29/month beyond a limited free tier | |
Free plan with up to 10 seats | 50 billable conversations per month; 50 Lyro AI conversations once (lifetime, not monthly); Tidio branding; Starter from $24.17/month with 100 billable conversations | |
Free plan with 2 agent seats, chat widget, shared inbox and mobile apps | Up to 100 customer profiles; no AI credits; unlimited data retention and branding removal are on paid plans (Mini is $45/month per workspace) | |
Free plan with 3 operators | 100 chat sessions per month; visitor tracking up to 10,000 visitors per month; own logo only on paid plans | |
Free live chat and chatbot builder inside the free CRM | Advanced automation needs a paid Marketing Hub edition | |
Free app for Shopify stores | Works with the Shopify admin and online store only | |
No free plan; 14-day trial | Essential from $19 per user per month billed annually, with 60 days of history |
Two patterns stand out. First, "free" plans differ more in which limit they impose than in whether they impose one: Tidio limits conversations but is generous with seats, Crisp limits seats and customer profiles, Zoho SalesIQ limits both chats and operators. Second, AI is almost never free at real volume.
Hidden costs that aren't on the pricing page
Your time. Free tools often come with less support and fewer automations. If routing, notifications and transfers are manual, the cost moves to your team's hours.
Switching later. Moving to another tool means new code on the site, retraining the team and possibly losing history. Check export before you start, not when you leave.
Privacy and compliance. Free or not, the chat vendor processes your customers' personal data. You still need a data processing agreement, a mention in your privacy policy and a cookie or consent setup that matches how the widget stores identifiers.
AI disclosure. If you add an AI assistant, EU rules now require telling people they're talking to an AI unless it's obvious; these transparency obligations have applied since 2 August 2026 (Houthoff, September 2026). Free bot builders don't always label bot messages clearly.
Page speed. A widget is third-party JavaScript on every page. Free or paid, measure your key pages before and after installation; Google treats an Interaction to Next Paint above 500 milliseconds as poor, per web.dev.
Messaging channels. If you want WhatsApp in the same inbox, Meta's own per-message fees apply regardless of your chat plan. Meta's pricing page describes changes from October 1, 2026, including a free tier of 1,000 service messages per business phone number per month.
Questions to answer before you connect a free chat
Use this list as a checklist. If you can't answer a question from the vendor's pricing page or documentation, ask their sales or support team in writing.
Team and volume
How many people will answer chats in the next 12 months, including part-timers?
How many conversations do we expect per month now, and in our busiest month?
What exactly happens when we hit a limit?
History and data
How long are conversations and files kept on the free plan?
Can we export everything, and in what format?
Where is the data stored, and who are the vendor's subprocessors, including the AI model provider?
Customer experience
Can visitors send files and images?
Does the widget work well on phones, and can we choose its position?
Can visitors continue a conversation later or from another device?
Is the branding acceptable for our site?
AI
Is any AI included, and is it a monthly allowance or a one-time trial?
What does AI cost per unit after the free allowance, and is there a cap?
Does the AI answer only from our materials, and does it hand off to a person in the same chat?
The upgrade path
What is the first paid step, and what does it unlock?
What would we pay at twice our current volume?
Is there a contract, or can we pay month to month?

When free is enough, and when it isn't
Free live chat is usually enough when:
one or two people answer, and you get up to a few dozen conversations a month;
you don't need conversation history older than a few months;
vendor branding is acceptable;
you're testing whether visitors want chat at all.
Plan a paid tool when:
several people share the queue and you need routing, departments and transfers;
customers write from WhatsApp, Instagram or Telegram as well as the website;
you need full history for warranty, legal or B2B account reasons;
you want an AI assistant to cover nights and weekends.
If you're at that point, How to choose live chat software has a scored checklist and a trial plan.
How Sensever's pricing works for a small team
Sensever is a messenger with business tools under one account; its website widget sends visitor messages into Requests, the team's queue. It doesn't have a separate "free plan" with feature cuts. Instead, business features are billed by usage, and some of that usage is free. Prices below are from sensever.com as of October 2026.
Agents. The project owner answers for free. Each additional project member who answers customers costs $9 per month, prorated by the time they're in the project. A one-person business can run the website widget and Requests without paying for seats.
Features. The free owner seat uses the same widget and Requests as a paid team: widget settings (greeting, color, position, automatic opening, department choice), page rules, auto-messages, visitor page history in each request and messenger channels (Website widgets, widget installation guide). We didn't find a monthly conversation cap in the documentation.
History. Conversations, messages and files are not deleted automatically (widget installation guide).
Files and storage. 5 GB of storage is free; above that it's $0.04 per GB per month. Files are counted for the owner of the place where they're used, such as the project owner.
Analytics. The widget code also works as a visitor pixel for Sensever's "Web analytics", free on every plan (Web analytics), and can send widget events to Google Tag Manager or GA4 (GTM and GA4 guide).
AI is not free. The optional AI assistant costs $19 per million tokens, with a $5 minimum per project in each month the AI is switched on or used. The landing page estimates one million tokens at roughly 2,000 assistant replies. The test chat shows the tokens each answer used, so you can estimate costs before turning it on (AI chat for your website).
In other words, the free part covers one person answering on the website and in messengers with full history; you start paying when you add teammates, store more than 5 GB or switch on AI.
FAQ
Is free live chat really free?
The chat itself can be, within limits on agents, conversations, history or branding. Costs usually appear when you add people, need longer history, remove branding or turn on AI.
What is the most common limit on free live chat plans?
The number of agents or the number of conversations per month. Some plans limit both. Check what happens when you reach the limit before you rely on the chat.
Can I remove the "Powered by" branding for free?
Usually not. Branding removal is a common paid upgrade. If it matters for your site, include its price in the comparison.
Do free live chat plans include AI chatbots?
Some include a rule-based bot builder or a small trial allowance of AI conversations. Generative AI at real volume is almost always paid, often on a separate meter.
Will I lose my chat history if I switch tools later?
You may, unless the vendor lets you export conversations. Test the export during your first week, not when you're leaving.
Is a free live chat safe for customer data?
It can be, but the same privacy duties apply as with any paid tool: a data processing agreement, an updated privacy policy and correct consent settings.
Conclusion
Free live chat is a sensible starting point if you know where the walls are. Check five limits — agents, conversations, history, files and branding — plus the price of AI, and compare them with your volume in your busiest month. Answer the checklist questions in writing, test the export, and decide in advance what your first paid step will be. When you're ready to install, follow the step-by-step guide to adding live chat to your website.
